  • AD&D Primer: Attributes

In Advanced Dungeons & Dragons (AD&D), player characters are represented by 6 attribute scores, explained below. The attributes range from 3 to 18, with average scores being 10. These scroes represent the sum of 3 6-sided dice. Certain races and classes offer bonuses and minuses or require a minimum higher than 3 as outlined elsewhere in this documentation.

    Strength (STR)

Strength (STR) is a measure of a character's physical prowess - how strong they are, how developed their musculature is, etc. STR is the prime requisite for the warrior classes - Fighters, Paladins and Rangers. STR determines damage bonus during melee attacks in addition to modifying the chances to hit an opponent, as well as non-combat functions like busting in doors. Warriors with a score of 18 gain an additional attribute: Strength Modifier (STR MOD). The STR MOD is a number from 1 to 100, with higher numbers representing even greater strength and damage potential and chance to hit in combat.

    Intelligence (INT)

Intelligence (INT) is roughly speaking the character's IQ. INT determines the max level for spells a magic-user can cast, as well as determining the max number of languages a character can speak. It is the prime requisite for magic-users.

    Wisdom (WIS)

Wisdom (WIS) is the character's common sense as well as a measure of their faith. WIS determines the max level oc priest spells a cleric or druid can cast. It is the prime requisite for clerics, rangers and druids.

    Dexterity (DEX)

Dexterity (DEX) is the character's agility and hand-eye coordination. DEX determines the Armor Class of characters, as well as adding bonuses of penalties to Thieving Skills. It is the prime requisite for thieves and rangers.

    Constitution (CON)

Constitution (CON) is character's physical hardiness and a measure of their overall health. CON determines bonuses and penalties for a character Hit Points.

    Charisma (CHA)

Charisma (CHA) is a measure of a character's amiability and beauty. CHA determines initial reactions between a character and others. CHA is a prime requisite for paladins and druids.
